Crime Prevention Alert Notices are issued to advise members of the college community of recent significant incidents of criminal activity reported on or near the City College of New York (CCNY) campus.
REPORTED INCIDENTS:
On October 15, 2011, at approximately 1:00 PM, a female student (Towers Resident) was walking while using her cellular phone in the area of 133th Street and St. Nicholas Terrace when she was approached by two (2) male suspects described as follows:
Both males attempted to snatch the cellular phone and purse from the student's hands but were unsuccessful. No weapons were involved and suspects immediately fled the area without the property, leaving the student without injury.
The Public Safety Department was also informed on October 14, 2011 that at approximately 1:10 PM, a male CCNY student was a victim of a Robbery at 146th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue (off campus – exiting the subway). The student reported he was exiting the subway while listening to his I-Pod when he was approached by a lone suspect (described as male, dark complexion, wearing a white sweatshirt). The suspect took the I-Pod from the student and fled the area without further incident.
Each incident involved similar circumstances: the victims were distracted by use of personal electronic devices. Members of the college community are advised to remain aware of their surroundings while traveling on the streets and on public transportation.
Police reports are on file and both cases are under active investigation by CCNY Department of Public Safety and the NYC Police Department.
Students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious activity immediately.
In an emergency, contact the Public Safety Department Emergency Dispatch Center at (212) 650-7777 or via any "blue light" emergency telephone on campus. Dial 911 to contact the NYPD.
