N.B.: There are variations in the General Education Requirement depending on the degree the student is pursuing, e.g. BA/BFA; BS; or BARCH. Other variations are followed by students pursuing different degrees in the School of Education, the School of Engineering or in the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education.
The General Education requirement at City College represents a quite specific and focused working through of both our aspirations for our students and our assessment of their needs, using the strengths of the College's unique and powerful academic programs. It addresses the critical skills they need to succeed and assures an understanding of different areas of study, key issues, values and points of view that will broaden their perspective, and guide them both in their studies and in their lives beyond City College. The General Education Requirement thus becomes a means by which our students' intellectual and personal growth are expanded at the same the same time that they are linked to the College.
FIQWS is a 6 credit course (in Engineering, 4 credits) taken by first semester Freshmen. It combines a writing section with an topic section taught at an introductory level. Generally speaking, full-time faculty teach the topic section and collaborate with writing instructors, who teach the composition half.
QUANTITATIVE COURSE: FQUAN is a 3 credit course that fulfills the basic quantitative requirement for CLAS students pursuing BA or BFA, but is usually taught in a department other than Math. It can examine the data and trends surrounding a specific issue, or look at quantitative applications in other fields such as a science, psychology, sociology, etc. Math 150, or 173, or 190 also satisfy the BA/BFA quantitative requirement. BS students must complete a Calculus sequence, while the Professional schools have a range of quantitative course requirements.
PERSPECTIVES Students must take courses in a number of categories called "PERSPECTIVES". A Perspective is a course designated to fulfill one of these requirement categories: Artistic, Global, Literary, Philosophical-Logical, Self and Society, Natural Science, Natural Science with Interactive Component, and US Society.
