Effective August 14, 2008, the Servicemember Civil Relief Act caps the maximum interest that may be charged on Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and Federal PLUS Loans first disbursed after July 1, 2008 to six percent (6%) during the borrower’s (and endorser’s, if applicable) active duty military service. Borrowers must contact the loan holder in writing to request the interest rate adjustment and provide a copy of the borrower’s (and endorser’s if applicable) military orders.

Those who borrowed through the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) should contact their loan servicer. Those who borrowed through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program should contact the Direct Loan Servicing via the "Contact Us" section at http://www.dl.ed.gov This request may be submitted via e-mail and should include a scanned copy of the orders attached to that email request.
