Attention Community Bus Passengers - Important Information Regarding Service Changes

The following is important information regarding  Community Bus service.  As of July 7, 2008, Community Bus service will be discontinued.

It is important to note that customers who have been using the Community Bus service for their travel needs will be able to use conventional bus routes which are also accessible and operate with greater frequency. Daily conventional service will take passengers directly to many favourite destinations; in most other cases only a single transfer will be required.Conventional bus routes:

Community Bus Service Changes - Questions & Answers

Why is this service being discontinued?
Community Bus has become a duplication of regular, low-floor bus routes. In addition, Community Bus service has seen a steady and substantial decrease in usage over the last several years. The decision to discontinue this service was approved during the 2008 budget process.

How much is it really costing to run the Community Bus service?
On the average, we have three customers per hour that use the Community Bus service and the cost to the Town to run this service is $267,000 per year. With the discontinuation of this service, the money saved will be used to improve service on other routes.

Is this going to limit my travel options?
No. Oakville Transit already offers conventional accessible bus service to all the destinations currently being serviced by Community Bus service.

I have only ever used the Community Bus service; I'm a uncertain about using the Conventional Bus service.
To help our residents in this transition, Oakville Transit has dedicated staff ready to answer your questions and make suggestions on routes that will get you to and from your destination. As well, Oakville Transit has implemented a "Call-out" procedure; all bus drivers will call out the next stop so you will always know when your stop is coming up.

How accessible are the Conventional buses?
Currently 80 per cent of all buses are low-floor buses making our buses very accessible. By the end of this year, 90 per cent of the fleet will be low-floor. All buses that run during off-peak hours and on weekends are all low-floor buses. Only during peak times, (6 - 9 a.m. & 3 - 6 p.m.), and only on a few routes, do we operate non-low-floor buses.

Why was Community Bus service introduced in the first place?
When the Community Bus service was introduced in Oakville in 1991, it filled a void in the transportation options available for seniors in this community due to the fact that the Town did not have any low-floor buses in their conventional transit fleet at the time. Since then, Oakville Transit has introduced low-floor, accessible buses on all routes making transportation to favourite destinations more convenient for all residents and visitors.
