A "triple" is a permanent or temporary situation where three students of the same gender live together in the same residence hall room.

Triple Life

There are two types of triple rooms:

  • late application triples: Approximately 600 students each fall semester are assigned space in late application triple rooms at the time space in permanent rooms is no longer available. late application triples are standard air-conditioned double rooms that are temporarily tripled by adding an extra bed and dresser.
  • Permanent Triple: rooms are for continuing students and freshmen with late Housing Application Dates. The rooms are designed to be triple rooms and are larger. Loft units with desks/wardrobes are provided. If a student moves out of the room due to room transfer or cancellation it will automatically be converted to a double room for the remainder of the contract period. Extra furniture cannot be removed from permanent triple rooms.

Benefits:

  • Triple rooms range in price depending on the residence hall. You can live more economically by living in a triple room.
  • Triples can present you with the opportunity to room with TWO of your friends or to meet two new friends.
  • Triple rooms provide the opportunity to experience different lifestyles and the opportunity to learn many new things about yourself.

Roommate Relationships in a Triple Room

Roommates need to spend time together. Taking time to listen and talk to each other at the beginning of this relationship will help get the year off to a good start. Below are some questions that will help get new roommate talking:

  • What are your hobbies/interests?
  • What’s your major/field of study and ideal job?
  • What are your expectations for the year academically and/or personally?
  • What are your religious beliefs/personal values?
  • What is your class schedule like?
  • Describe your ideal study environment/habits?  Can you study with other people in the room?
  • What are your thoughts on guests of either gender and appropriate times of visitation?
  • What are your attitudes towards alcohol and drug use?
  • What are your expectations regarding room cleanliness?  How will you divide basic housekeeping duties?
  • What have you learned about roommate relationships from previous roommate situations?
  • How do you deal with gripes and tension?

HOW IS TRIPLE SPACE DIVIDED?
late application triple rooms are furnished with a bunk bed and an additional bed, three dressers, two desks with chairs, and two closets. Space permitting and with the approval of all roommates, an extra desk with chair can be requested. If an extra desk and chair are desired, an iServiceDesk request can be submitted as early as opening day. Typically these will be delivered to the room within 5 business days. There are a limited number of extra desks and chairs

Permanent triple rooms are furnished with a bunk bed and an additional lofted bed, three dressers, three desks with chairs, and three closets.

Division of space in all rooms needs to be discussed by roommates during the first week of school. Roommates need to be fair and consistent in determining what constitutes "living space" and "personal space".

WHEN WILL WE BE DETRIPLED?
For late application triple rooms, detripling lists will be available to view on move in day at the front desk of your area office. (Sorry, we will not have this information prior to opening day since cancellations and new assignments to these spaces will occur through opening day.) Room transfers begin after the two week transfer freeze at the beginning of each semester and could go through early Spring semester. First, freshmen in late application triples are automatically detripled based on the earliest Housing Application Date of one of the three residents. A student's Housing Application Date is the date when a student completes a Residence Hall Application including payment of the $25 housing application fee.

Permanent triples are not detripled unless one of the roommates moves out voluntarily. However, students in permanent triples are permitted to transfer to other rooms if space is available after the late application triple detripling process.

WHO MOVES OUT OF A late application triple?
In late application triples, by detripling time, the three roommates should have discussed which two roommates want to stay together. This discussion should be based on compatibility and relationships between roommates among other considerations. If the three roommates cannot mutually decide among themselves who is to move, Housing staff will intervene to facilitate the decision. If a mutual decision still cannot be reached, the roommate with the latest Housing Application Date will be asked to move unless one of the students with the latest Housing Application Date was assigned to the room as part of a roommate pair.

HOW LONG TO MOVE OUT OF A late application triple?
In late application triples, the roommate who moves has a specific time period in which to complete the move. If he/she does not move within the specified time period, please report this to the Resident Assistant. DO NOT move that resident�s belongings out of the room without permission. Be considerate and seek help if there are any problems.

RENT ADJUSTMENT AFTER DETRIPLING?
Effective the date when the room is detripled, the students that remain in the detripled room will have their rent prorated at the double room rate for the remainder of the contract. The student that moves will have their rent prorated based on the rental rate for the room to which they move for the remainder of their contract.

STAY IN A late application triple?
This question should be addressed by roommates early in the semester to be of benefit. When deciding to stay in a late application triple, all the pros and cons should be weighed equally in order to arrive at some type of consensus. It is critical that each roommate have input into this decision so that it will be an equitable one for all parties involved. Roommates are required to sign a form at the Area Desk if they decide to stay together.

FURNITURE AFTER DETRIPLING?
When late application triples are detripled, the furniture will remain in the room. Due to the lack of storage space, the raised bed with the dresser underneath and bunk beds cannot be removed from the room. DO NOT place the bed in the hallway. In a permanent triple, all furniture must remain in the room and is not to be moved.

In permanent triples, furniture cannot be removed if one of the roommates moves out.
