What Will I Learn?
As a student studying sociology at Heartland Community College, you will study society and social behavior by examining the groups and social institutions people form, as well as various social, religious, political, and business organizations. HCC offers a variety of courses in sociology including marriage and family, social problems, sociology of gender, sociology of deviant behavior, and sociology of death and dying.
What Is The Occupational Outlook?
Most sociologists work in one or more specialties such as social organization, stratification, and mobility; racial and ethnic relations; education; the family; social psychology; urban, rural, political, and comparative sociology; gender relations; demography; gerontology; criminology; and sociological practice.
In the State of Illinois in 2006, the median annual salary for sociologists was $86,872. 1
What Are My Options?
The Associates Degree with emphasis in Sociology is designed for students planning to complete the first two years of study leading to a baccalaureate degree and major in sociology at a four-year college of university.
Sociologists may find work conducting policy research for consulting firms and nonprofit organizations, and their knowledge of society and social behavior may be used by a variety of companies in product development, marketing, and advertising. Other occupations include census bureau employee, gerontologist, teacher, criminologist, etc.
