What Will I Learn?
The Business curriculum at Heartland includes courses for transfer preparation, as well as courses for those interested in developing business-related job skills, continuing education, or pursuing a certificate program in sales or small business management. Courses include an introductory course on the influence of economic, social, and political pressures on business systems and operating procedures including markets, production, organization, management, and government regulation of business, as well as courses on business communications, computer applications and business systems, workforce preparation, customer relations, supervision, sales, business law, management, human resources, marketing, and financial planning and budgeting.
What Is The Occupational Outlook?
Employment in business management is projected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. 1
Earnings in business vary greatly depending on the employer, the specialty, and the geographic area. For example, in the State of Illinois in 2006, the median annual salary was $54,041 for business and financial operations occupations, $76,249 for business management occupations, and $87,602 for computer and information systems managers. 2
What Are My Options?
A Certificate in Business Essentials can be earned by completing 16 credit hours. This certificate focuses on development of job skills and resume writing in preparing students to enter the workforce in office and other business environments.
A Certificate in Small Business Management can be earned by completing 32 credit hours. This certificate is designed to improve and enhance the business skills of small business managers and entrepreneurs. The program is intended for those interested in obtaining business skills prior to opening a small business, for individuals employed as managers or owners of small businesses who could benefit from additional education, and for students interested in seeking office management positions within small business.
The Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) in Sport Management can be earned by completing 62 credit hours. This degree prepares students for entry-level positions in the sport industry.
The Associates Degree with emphasis in Business is designed for students planning to complete the first two years of study leading to a baccalaureate degree and major in business at a four-year college or university.
