Ethnographic Project on Heartland Community College Student Life

We have been introducing our anthropology students as researchers to our on-going applied anthropology research project on community college student life. The project gives the students an exceptional chance to explore students' distinctive voices and mentalities on college, late-adolescence, adulthood, and certain general American cultural notions--individualism, friendship, community, bureaucracy, diversity, race, ethnicity, sex, intellect, work, and play. It helps to identify the needs of the community college and the community within which the college is located. The project also provides the students a remarkable opportunity to learn anthropological field techniques through actual ethnographic fieldwork, and thereby letting them prepare themselves as a para professional labor force for the changing field of anthropology.
