Applied Computer Science

What Will I Learn?

The Applied Computer Science courses are designed to help students develop skills and techniques that are applicable to problems that are typical in an office environment. Courses in the curriculum progress from a general overview of integrated software applications to more intensive studies of each application. These applications include presentation graphics, spreadsheets, word processing, database applications, desktop publishing as well as special topics relating to the field.

What Is The Occupational Outlook?

Administrative and support services, health care and social assistance, and professional, scientific, and technical services will generate the most new job opportunities for this field. Employment positions for this area include office clerks, office managers, and administrative assistants.

In 2006, in the State of Illinois, the median annual salary for these positions ranged from $26,490-$43,984. 1

What Are My Options?

A Certificate in Business Technology can be earned by completing 34-36 credit hours. This certificate prepares students for jobs requiring the use of microcomputers.

The Certificate in Office Basics can be earned by completing 20 credit hours. This certificate prepares students to effectively work in office administration and support positions.

The Associates in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) in Business Technology can be earned in by completing 61 credit hours. This degree prepares students to specialize in microcomputers and involves extensive hands-on experience.
