Open Learning Courses; Additional Credit Hours
Heartland Community College students seeking additional credit hours are encouraged to explore the College’s open learning courses as an alternative to traditional classroom learning.
Depending on the course, open learning courses at HCC can help students earn additional half- or whole-hour credits and are formatted to provide a unique blend of traditional and online courses that feature flexible, individualized instruction. Students may enroll in an open learning course at any time during the spring 2012 semester through Thursday, April 12. Each open learning course has an in-lab requirement that varies from two to 16 hours. Students will complete this requirement in the Business Technology Learning Center in the Workforce Development Center (Room WDC 2606) at their own convenience. While students can work through open learning courses at their own pace, all coursework must be completed by the end of the regular semester. Lab hours also are available at the College’s Lincoln and Pontiac Centers.
In order to take advantage of this opportunity, students must schedule an appointment with an advisor to register for open learning courses. After registering, students will sign any necessary open learning course documents in the Business Technology Learning Center and see a lab facilitator to get started on their coursework.
HCC’s open learning courses include: Introduction to Computer Concepts (ACSM 102), Introduction to Computer Skills (ACSM 103), Workforce Preparation (BUSN 145), Keyboarding (OTEC 101), Document Formatting (OTEC 102), Office Simulation (OTEC 104), Introductory Records Management (OTEC 113), Intermediate Records Management (OTEC 114), and Advanced Records Management (OTEC 115).

HCC Scholarship Applicants Needed for 2012-13
Heartland Community College's Foundation Office is seeking scholarship applicants for students who plan to enroll or are already enrolled at the College for the 2012-13 academic year.
Current and prospective students can review scholarship information -- including scholarship descriptions and criteria -- at the Foundation's Web site, www.hccfoundation.org , by clicking on "Scholarships." Scholarship applications can be submitted online through a current student's myHeartland account. Prospective students must first complete the HCC Application for Enrollment to the College and return it to Student Services before being granted access to the online scholarship application. All applications are due March 1, 2012.
Scholarships are awarded based on a wide range of criteria, with specific scholarships focusing on academic excellence, community service, specific majors and county residency. Financial need is not always a determining factor in earning scholarship awards.
The Heartland Community College Foundation awarded one scholarship for every four completed applications for the 2010-11 academic year. The application process is simple and the Foundation staff is available to assist interested applicants by answering any questions.
