Disability Support Programs
The office of Disability Support Services is an office that includes advisement, counseling and special assistance in all school-related matters. The department offers a wide variety of services which you can link to at the top of the page. The office utilizes resources of both campus and community agencies to meet the needs of disabled students and support them in meeting their educational goals.
Our College vision, compact and mission give emphasis to our meeting the needs of the students that enter CSCC. Because of the nature of the ADA and Section 504, accommodations ensure access, but do not ensure success. Academic and technical standards must be met. The law speaks of “reasonable accommodations”; however, an accommodation is not deemed reasonable if it imposes “undue financial or administrative burdens” or it requires fundamental alteration in the nature of a program. (Darin v. Massachusetts, 980 F. Supp 77 (MA 197).)
Support services are available to promote individual achievement. Efforts are made to ensure that facilities and programs area accessible to all students in accordance with Section 504 and the ADA prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability.
The office of Disability Support Services provides appropriate accommodations for all disabled students who submit requests. The college makes every effort to eliminate any physical or instructional barriers to ensure that all disabled students have an equal opportunity for full participation with minimal effort.
The Coordinator of Disability Support must ascertain what constitutes a barrier on an individual-by-individual basis, since the special needs of each are different.
Record Keeping
Records are maintained on disabled students registered with the office. Students with visible and invisible disabilities such as learning disabilities must provide appropriate documentation of their disability.
Counseling
Counseling Services focuses mainly on disability-related issues, but career and school- related counseling is also available. Assistance with class scheduling is provided, as well
Support Services
The office provides academic and auxiliary support. Academic aids include readers, note takers, tutors and interpreter assistance. Auxiliary aids include tape recorders, textbooks, computers, and contacts with Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic for taped books. Parking spaces for disabled students are available throughout the campus. All students who intend to park a motor vehicle in an area designated for individuals with disabilities must have a valid state disability parking permit (i.e., plates, hang tags and placards). All vehicles parked in areas designated for individuals with disabilities must be registered with Campus Security. With proper documentation, temporary parking permits are available through campus security.
