COMMUNICATION SKILLS

One of the most important skills that you use everyday and in many levels is communication. You will succeed in an organization if you demonstrate effective communication in the following areas:

I. Interpersonal
a. conflict management-use “I” statements, avoid blame
b. negotiation – win/win, state clear goals, compromise
c. delegation- clear directions, allow for feedback,

II. Nonverbal
a. Visual- body language, eye contact
b. Tactile- touch, handshake
c. Vocal- tone of voice, cultural differences
d. Space- intimate zone, personal zone, public zone

III. Active listening
a. Encouraging- show interest, don’t interrupt
b. Restating- empathy, use “I” hear, facts
c. Reflecting-feeling, question, avoid accusations
d. Summarizing-restate, focus on important issues, goal or solution
