Basketball History

Cleveland State Basketball has more than a 30-year history.  Since 1968, Cleveland State has been represented by over four hundred young men who have worn the Cougar uniform.  The program has seen a significant amount of success, with many student athletes using Cleveland State as a vehicle to further their education and continue participation in athletics.  Many continue their athletic and academic careers by transferring to four-year schools.

Highlights in the history of Cleveland State Basketball include Division Championships in 1985 and 1998, a State Championship in 1971, and a Region VII Championship and NJCAA tournament bid in 1989.

Cleveland State is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Tennessee Junior Community College Athletic Association.

Head Basketball Coach

In 2008-2009 Lee Cigliano will begin his 13th season as Head Coach of the Cleveland State Basketball program.  Cigliano has built a competitive program on a consistent basis since he took over in July of 1996.  Two major highlights during Cigliano’s tenure came in 1998 when the Cougars won the school’s second ever TJCCAA Eastern Division Championship in only Cigliano’s second year as Head Coach and in 2007 when the team finished as as runner up in the TJCCAA Region 7 Tournaments. During Cigliano’s first five years when qualifying for the Region 7 Tournament required schools to finish in the top four of each division, Cleveland State qualified three times by finishing in the top three.  To appreciate this further one must consider the fact that Cleveland State did not finish in the top three of their division in the previous eight seasons.
In 2003-2004 Cigliano led Cleveland State to the most wins since the 1987-1988 season by finishing with a 22-10 record.  Cigliano’s teams have finished in the upper half of the TJCCAA East Division six out of the twelve years of his tenure.  Cigliano has coached two All Americans, Demetrius Morgan and Mykail Vibbert as well as four Academic All-Americans, Josh Sullivan, Jonathan Martin, Travis Lee, and Mykail Vibbert
Cigliano has had numerous players transfer to four-year institutions with over fifty percent of his players, who completed two years, moving on to four-year colleges or universities.  Coach Cigliano now has the longest tenure of any coach in school history, moving past Joe Crabtree, the school’s first coach.
