The Technology Department Degree Programs

There are several educational paths to choose from in the Technology Department. Our courses typically appeal to two different groups of people: recent high school graduates who have recognized the need for additional skills before entering the work force and people that have already been in industry and either need more education or are interested in changing fields
In any given course, we may have students working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree or completing one of our Workforce Certificates. We may also have people sent here by their employer to gain new skills and additional training or students who plan to transfer to a four-year school and are taking advantage of our convenience and affordability.

A large number of our students attend courses part-time while continuing to work. We offer both daytime and nighttime sessions of the courses in our department to meet the needs of our part-time students. Our faculty advisors are very helpful in constructing a schedule that will allow you to work on an education without sacrificing your home life or quitting your regular job.

Many times, someone will start at Cleveland State in one of our Certificate Programs. After completing that, they will continue to take courses toward an Associate of Applied Science Degree.
We enjoy terrific working relationships with several local companies. In the past, we have offered courses at Maytag, Duracell, and Schering Plough, just to name a few. We are especially proud of our relationship with Duracell: they send a large number of their employees through a modification of our Electro-Mechanical Certification.

Associate of Applied Science Degree

The Applied Technology concentration in the General Technology Major is designed for students who wish to complete a two-year technical degree applicable to immediate employment. Students with a significant amount of transfer credit, students with a diploma from a Tennessee Technology Center, certificate completers or those who wish to use electives to create a unique program should consider this major.

Approved by the National Association of Industrial Technology, the Industrial Technology Major provides opportunities for students to specialize in any one of a variety of technical areas. The general education core and technical core provide a foundation that allows specialization through selection of one of the following concentrations:

  • Computer Information Technology (ATMAE Accredited)
  • Construction Technology (ATMAE Accredited)
  • Drafting & Design (ATMAE Accredited)
  • Electronics (ATMAE Accredited)
  • Electro-mechanical Maintenance (ATMAE Accredited)
  • Operations Technician (ATMAE Accredited)

Workforce Preparedness Technical Certificates

Often referred to as “One Year Programs,” these programs are designed to give the student a concentration of courses in a chosen field. In less than a year, the student can master the technology required to start in a new field or advance in their current profession. In many cases, after completing one of these certificate programs, students decide to complete an Associate of Applied Science degree in one of the concentrations offered here at ClSCC

Transfer Options

A student, intending to transfer to a senior institution upon completion of coursework at Cleveland State Community College, should consult the academic advisor and the senior institution catalog before beginning our programs. These are technical programs, designed to prepare students for employment, and is not a transfer program, although many institutions accept all or part of the course work toward the bachelor’s degree.
