MyCLE is piloting a CCIT-supported secure testing facility spring semester 2003 for faculty using the MyCLE Testing/Assessment tool.

The 32 workstations in McAdams 103 are running Securexam™ Browser, which is a security application that locks down the Windows operating system on workstations, only allowing access to the MyCLE Testing/Assessment tool via a secure Internet browser. This lock-down will prevent students from using any other application (including instant messaging, Web or network applications, etc.) during testing.

"This pilot program is in response to faculty requests and concerns regarding on-line testing. The technology used during the pilot will, to some degree, provide a solution by restricting the use of other applications while taking tests online," said Carla Rathbone, Collaborative Learning Environment director.

In this facility, faculty members are able to track a student's computer usage during an exam and know right away if a student has attempted to cancel/quit an exam, access other applications during an exam or tamper with the Securexam™ Browser application. At the conclusion of the exam, instructors are able to save or print a report with exam details and workstation IP addresses.

Even though CCIT will be providing the necessary software and equipment for this facility, faculty members must be present during the exam to verify student identity (i.e., check class roll, student ids, etc.) and monitor student progress.

"This is a pilot program. As a result, we hope to learn more about this type of technology and how we might enhance our Web-based testing capabilities in the future," Rathbone said.

Faculty classes are now being offered on the use of the secure testing facility. Please visit cle.clemson.edu to register.
