Super Summer 2005

Hundreds of Young Learners aged 7-18 are enjoying a Super Summer at the British Council. While attending our 10 week summer English courses, they have had the opportunity to participate in exciting extra-curricular activities organised by the British Council. An Open Day was held for all parents and Young Learners on Saturday, 20 August between 1700 – 2000 to see the results of the students' work over the summer

‘Young Voices’

Junior Young Learners, aged 7-11, took part in our ‘Young Voices’ project and learned to sing English songs. Special music teachers have been brought in to help the children learn their songs. They all enjoyed singing and practising their performances for the Open Day. This event was for all parents and students, and took place on Saturday, 20 August.

‘Teen Snaps’

Senior Young Learners, aged 12-15, took part in a project called ‘Teen Snaps’. This project came from the idea to give young people the chance to express their thoughts and feelings about Vietnam and its culture through photographs. SONY kindly sponsored this photography project. Teachers worked with the children to explore their ideas through themes including tradition, technology, shopping, sport, leisure and friendship.

Before going out on location to different places in Hanoi, the children attended photography workshops delivered by an expert photographer with a lot of experience working with children. SONY also sent experts to the workshops to help the children with the technical issues of taking photos. The children went out and took hundreds of photos of Hanoi, its places and people. After that, each student chose their favourite photos and has written a caption to describe their choice. The children really enjoyed the activities and their photos are surprisingly beautiful and evocative. The photos were displayed by theme on our Open Day, to which all parents and students were invited. A panel of judges selected the best photos and prizes were included SONY cameras and British Council bags.

Bui Ngoc Anh, a grade 8 student at Giang Vo Secondary School, is the photographer of  ‘But Phap’ (Calligraphy). Here she captures a moment when an old man was writing letters at Ngoc Son temple. She said ’I find calligraphy is nearly extinct nowadays, so I took this photo to let people know more about its beauty.” She also added: ‘I liked this summer project very much. I have learned about taking photos, and about the style of writing English when writing a description of my favourite picture.”

Info Chats and British Council Cup 2005

Our high school students on our ESS (English for Study Success) programme enjoyed their summer with our Info Chats and British Council Cup 2005. At the Info Chats, Vietnamese alumni talked about the cultural differences students might experience when they study overseas in future, how to deal with these differences and how to adapt to a new life easily in a new country. Students also played exciting matches in our very first football competition. They played in the hot sun and won prizes. The white team with members from GEC3 managed to beat our ESS students and won the 2005 cup.
