From the Hilton Hotel to The Public Theater:

• Take the N/R/W train from 7th Avenue/57th Street downtown to the 8th Street station. Walk one block east to Lafayette Street and two blocks south to the theater.

From the Hilton Hotel to HERE Arts Center:

• Take the E Train from 5th Avenue/53rd Street or 7th Avenue/53rd Street downtown to Spring Street station and walk one block south to the venue.

From the Hilton Hotel to the Chelsea Art Museum:

• Take the E Train from 5th Avenue/53rd Street or 7th Avenue/53rd Street downtown to 23rd Street station. Walk one block south and 3 blocks west to the museum.

The 2009 Under the Radar Festival brought leading-edge contemporary UK performances to New York audiences.

Discovered during the British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase, two exceptional UK companies offered a fresh look at the overlap between visual art and live performance.

NEWS FROM NOWHERE:  ENGLAND

Tim Crouch and his company News from Nowhere continued an extended US tour of their new work England at the Chelsea Art Museum as part of the Under the Radar Festival.

England is staged inside a museum gallery space and at its heart explores the nature of trading in art and human beings.  A powerful, layered play, England excavates the lives of ordinary people caught up in a global world - utilizing multiple voices and a scorching original text, the performance surrounds the audience and implicates them in an intimate mystery.

Crouch is the most engaging of performers, and he is actually exploring on stage the nature of art and performance itself, taking risks in the process...At these moments, Crouch is armed and dangerous.

Tim Crouch’s work displays the touch of a consummate storyteller and an inventive mind determined to explore the possibilities of theatrical form. Fascinated by the expressive nature of performance, Crouch’s original work is intelligent and gripping, always treading the line between playfulness and serious engagement directly with audiences.

RAY LEE COMPANY:  SIREN

Ray Lee performed Siren in 2009 at dates in the US and Canada – the company's early performances were at HERE Arts Center during the Under the Radar Festival.

An otherworldly experience, Siren is an innovative spectacle which sits comfortably in the area between theater, music, visual art installation and science.

During the performance, metal "sirens" with arms spinning at high velocities atop sturdy tripods created pitched calls in an electronic choir. With its overtones of danger and irresistible draw, Siren builds a layered soundscape and kinetic visual picture audiences can wander through at their leisure and explore.

I could have sat for hours hypnotized by the final crystal chord of the spinning oscillators.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ray Lee is an artist, composer and performer whose work investigates the hidden world of electro-magnetic radiation and how sound can be used as evidence of invisible phenomena.

He is interested in the way that science and philosophy represent the universe and his work in the arts involves sound installations/performances that explore 'circles of ether', the invisible forces that surround us.
