Assessment

Assessment is continuous, with no final examination. There are two components of assessment:

1. Teaching practice
You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at two levels of ability, usually Beginner/Elementary and Intermediate. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the 6 hours.

2. Written assignments
You will complete four written assignments:

one focusing on one of the learners in your teaching practice group
one on the English language system
one on language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
one on classroom teaching and your continuing professional development.

To be awarded the certificate you must pass both components. There are three grades – Pass, Pass ‘B’ and Pass ‘A’.

A Typical Day/Week

A typical day will involve arriving at 08:30 if you are teaching at 09:00. Each morning you will either be teaching or observing fellow trainees teaching. After lunch, there are 2 input sessions conducted by the tutors and then there is lesson planning if you are teaching the next day, or lesson observation of British Council teachers if you are not teaching the next day. Your day at the British Council will usually end around 19:00 but this is only a general rule-of-thumb and you may find yourself either planning lessons or writing up assignments later in the evening.

At the weekend, you will usually be planning lessons for the following week or writing up assignments.
