New Opportunity for Journalists

Media and Social Inclusion Project

In order to support the media’s role in promoting social inclusion, the British Council began a Project with the BBC World Service Trust in 2005 designed to serve this end.  The following year the Journalists Association of Turkey (TGC) joined this project as a national partner.   In the first phase of the Media and Social Inclusion Project, the research was conducted on journalists revealed significant findings regarding the media representation of disadvantaged groups. In phase two, a Media and Diversity Guide was developed in order to make an important and functional contribution to the media’s approach to ethical issues in Turkey.

Online Education System for Journalists

The “Online Education System for Journalists” can be described as the third phase of the Project, and like the other two phases it has been successful in pioneering significant advances that raise journalism standards in Turkey.

Developments in technology have led to new opportunities and new horizons being opened in education. Distance learning systems, coupled with the effective use of IT, make it possible to meet the needs of all ages and levels by getting information to them independent of time and location.

This system, established with the cooperation of the British Council, BBC World Service Trust and the Turkish Journalists Association, is also important as the first online learning initiative realized in Turkey by a non-governmental organization in the field of journalism, within the framework of possibilities offered by technology.

Online Education (i-Learn) in 21 Countries

Operating by using content management systems (CMS) developed by BBC World Service Trust, this system contributes to the education of journalists in 21 different countries and languages. In Turkey, we are bringing to life a course structured from modules that will contribute to debates under the heading of Media and Social Inclusion.

Noteworthy efforts of the Project consultants during the development of the project were those of Associate Professor Mine Gencel Bek and Asst Prof. Abdülrezak Altun.  These instructors from the Department of Journalism in the Faculty of Communication at Ankara University provided their support in adapting the educational material from English to Turkish and in revising the content and visual materials to include examples for local use.
