Different professions require deeper exploration of different aspects and elements of language, in order to equip students with a proper tool for communication and career development.
Our aim is to develop a series of English language teaching and learning materials that would “hit the right button” for each industry sector.
Piloting the Project in Turkey
As the first stage of the project, we piloted the activity in Turkey in collaboration with the Turkish Ministry of Education, to respond to the needs of the key area of economy - the tourism sector.
We aim to develop vocational language learning and teaching materials for students and teachers, working in Turkey's Hotel and Tourism High Schools.
Specifically, we plan to:
develop three sets of support materials for the vocational English element of the Turkish curriculum in Hotel and Tourism (H&T) covering three elements: accommodation, transport and serviceOur goal is to transform the skills of 22,000 students studying in Turkey's 106 Hotel and Tourism High Schools.
What the Stakeholders Say
"The project has brought into focus for the Ministry many of the issues related to English language teaching and learning." The Minister of Education, Dr Hüseyin Çelik, who sees the findings and recommendations of the project as forming the possible "basis for reform of ELT throughout the vocational education sector.”
"I've improved myself and realised my capabilities. We have had many training courses but I feel I have really developed a valuable skill during this training which will have an effect on English teaching in all tourism schools, not just my classroom." A participating teacher
In 2009-10 we plan to use excellent pilot results to roll out the project in several other countries taking part in the Skills@work project.
