Young Design Entrepreneur of Turkey awarded to
Pınar Yar Gövsa !
The winner of the British Council’s International Young Design Entrepreneur Competition was announced on 24 July at an award ceremony held at British Consulate, Istanbul. The Competition was run in collaboration with Eczacıbaşı Holding and VitrA.
On 24 July, 10 short listed finalists presented their experiences in design entrepreneurship and their future plans to the jury that included Algın Berker (Senior Brand Communication Manager Eczacibasi Building Products), Sertaç Ersayın (Industrial Designer / President of ETMK Istanbul Branch), Demir Obuz (Co-founder, Design Manager, Demirden Design), Osman Can Özcanlı (Product Designer, Kaltek Engineering) and Beatrice Pembroke (Creative Economy Advisor, British Council).
Winner of the International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2009
Pınar Yar Govsa won the title “Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year, Turkey” for her creative and entrepreneurial approach of setting up her business both in product design and production. She is the co-founder of the company GAEAforms and working as a creative director. GAEAforms ( www.gaeaforms.com) is a new manufacturing and design company that specializes in the highest quality furniture design. In September Govsa traveled to the UK to represent Turkey and compete against representatives from seven other countries to win the title of International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year.
Between 15th and 26th of September 2009, the eight finalists from India, Indonesia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates visited the UK: a tour of the national design industry, which culminated in attending 100% Design (24-27 September) and London Design Festival. The programme comprised visits to designers, design-lead retailers and manufacturers, and institutions active in the procurement of design and architecture. The visits also included the Design Council, the Design Museum, the University of the Arts London (Enterprise Centres), The Lighthouse (Scotland’s national centre for architecture and design), and the Glasgow School of Art, and various successful design firms (including Timorous Beasties, SCP, and a private masterclass with a leading design entrepreneur – previously Sir Terence Conran, and Tom Dixon).
Pınar Yar Govsa, traveled to the UK to represent Turkey and to compete against representatives from other countries. Rami Farook, from United Arab Emirates has been announced as the International Young Design Entrepreneur of 2009 and awarded £5000 to be spent on a project in collaboration with the British Council.
Govsa was presented a special commendation by the jury with the following comment:
‘Pınar gave an impassioned and truly inspirational presentation. Her approach reflects her own cultural experiences, and the resulting business imperative champions a contemporary approach to design that makes her both a role model for the sector and a successful businesswoman. The judges particularly commend Pinar for her commitment to developing the language of design in a business context’.
