Regional English Language Teaching Project Cascade Training March 2007
8th & 9th March 2007On Thursday and Friday 8th & 9th March, a two-day training seminar took place at CENAFFE, as a contiuning part of the cascade phase of the NENA, (Near East and North Africa), RELT, (Regional English Language Teaching), Project. In attendance were secondary level teacher trainers from 12 different regions of Tunisia, and the two workshop facilitators, Hela Nafti, (ELT School’s Inspector, Ministry of Education), and Andrea Marsh, (ELT Co-ordinator, British Council).
The seminar was designed to assist the teacher trainers in cascading the RELT project workshops to teachers in their region, and to discuss ways of evaluating the impact of the project, and of ensuring its’ future sustainability.
The semniar began with 5 presentations, each one focusing on a different RELT workshop, (‘Process Writing’, ‘Games from the Internet’, ‘Pronunciation Activities’, ‘Listening Skills’ and ‘Exploiting Authentic Reading Texts’), and each presented by a trainer from a different region. Following each presentation, there was a chance for everyone assembled to discuss their own experiences of cascading the workshop.
The afternoon focused on using listening material from the four British Council websites, (Go4English, Teaching English, Learn English and Language Assistant), to create lesson plans, designed to supplement the secondary school English curriculum.
Day Two started with a closer look at the materials available on the Teaching English website, and how these could be used in training sessions. The workshop was rounded off with a hands-on session at the computers in which the teacher trainers explored a regional online community, created to help English teachers and trainers across the region, share ideas and materials.
