Britain is one of the world's major centres for theatre and has a long and rich dramatic tradition. Actors, directors, and audiences continue to interpret and appreciate the classical British repertoire, such as the works of Shakespeare, Marlowe, Congreve, Sheridan, Priestley and Rattigan, and contemporary playwrights uphold the standard of excellence set by their predecessors. Many present day writers have won international renown for their work. They include Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter, Alan Ayckbourn, Caryl Churchill, Alan Bennett, Peter Shaffer, David Hare, Michael Frayn, Simon Gray, Christopher Hampton and David Edgar.
