Elementary   
a gig (n – inf) - A concert by a pop or rock band.  Eg  I’ve got two tickets to the Razorlight gig next week.  Would you like to come with me?   
be a piece of cake (idiom) - Very easy. Eg The teacher said the test was very difficult but it was a piece of cake!   
What’s up? (phrase) - What’s the matter? Eg You don’t look very happy. What’s up?   
to give somebody a lift (coll) - To take somebody to a place in your car. Eg Can you give me a lift to the station?   
to make a mess (coll) - To be untidy. Eg The children made a terrible mess in the kitchen when they tried to make breakfast.   
letter Z (n) - In America, the last letter of the alphabet is pronounced zee. In Britain, it is pronounced zed.   
lol (sms language) - Means: laughing out loud. Eg I loved the joke, lol.   

Intermediate   
chuffed (adj inf UK) - To be very pleased e.g. John’s chuffed that he passed the exam.   
a rip-off (n) - Something that is very overpriced. Eg Designer clothes are a rip-off!   
livid (adj) - Very angry. Eg When my parents came home in the middle of my party, they were absolutely livid. The TV had been smashed.   
to come up with something (v phrase) To think of an idea such as a plan.  Eg  Stefan came up with a great idea to make money.   
to learn something by heart (idiom)  Learn something so you know it perfectly e.g. He’ll pass the exam no problem. He’s learnt all the vocabulary by heart.   
a day off  A day when you do not work. Eg I took a day off because I didn't feel well.   
to set an example (col) To show others how to behave. Eg You’re older than the other children. You really should set a good example to them.   
nappy (n - UK) diaper (n - US) A thick piece of paper or cloth worn by a baby on its bottom.  Eg The baby smells, I think you need to change his nappy.   
b4n (sms language) Means: bye for now. Eg I've got to get back to work b4n.   

Advanced   
to mumble (v) - To speak softly and unclearly. Eg He left the room mumbling to himself.   
nepotism (n)  - Showing favouritism to your own family when you are in a position of power. Eg He’s terrible, he only got the job through nepotism.    
to grab a bite (idiom) - to have a quick meal or snack. Eg I'm going to grab a bite before my class starts.   
once in a blue moon (expression) - Very rarely. Eg He visits his parents once in a blue moon.   
a brief stint (col) - A short period of time. Eg I worked a brief stint as a waiter when I was a student.   
a rough estimate (col) - An approximate calculation. Eg At a rough estimate the new airliner will cost about 100 million to develop.
