This course will illustrate the key theoretical issues in the CLIL approach and provide practical guidance in assessing, monitoring and improving teacher and student competence in the bilingual classroom. The participants will be familiarized with the CLIL compendium and the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) guidance system and design and review their own testing experiment. Do and David will draw on their vast experience and present examples from different countries and introduce various European and international CLIL support resources. The course dates in March and May 2007 will give each participant enough time to test out new practices in between the modules and feed results and student reactions back into the course. A strong focus will be set on group work and discussion.
Please be sure to bring along your favourite teaching materials, as there will be a book table set up in one of the course rooms. We are excited that the representative of Cambridge University Press will be present on one course date to introduce new English text books on both English materials and text books both in Natural and Social Sciences.
David Marsh is a specialist in applied linguistics and researches and teaches at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He is an experienced lecturer on bilingual education and has run CLIL workshops throughout Europe, Africa and South-East Asia. He is one of the main authors of the CLIL Compendium and the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) CLIL teacher guidance system - two tools that are very helpful in assessing and improving competence in the CLIL classroom. In 2002 he produced CLIL - The European Dimension: Actions, Trends and Foresight Potential for the European Commission (DG EAC). This overview of the situation in Europe was used in the compilation of the 2004-2006 EC Action Plan: Promoting Language Learning & Linguistic Diversity. Currently, David is handling various large-scale educational development initiatives in Russia and Tanzania, alongside various tasks in the EU.
Do Coyle is co-director of the Centre for Research into Second and Foreign Language Pedagogy at the University of Nottingham. She initiated the BILD Programme (Bilingual Integration of Languages and Disciplines), the only initial teacher training course for bilingual education in the UK. Do has published widely in the field of bilingual education and taught a range of highly successful in-service and higher degree workshops in CLIL.
Do's current research focuses on strategic classrooms and she has set up the first Teaching Observatory using interactive technology between the university and a state comprehensive school with a thriving bilingual section. Do also collaborated with David on the development of the CLIL Compendium.
