CLIMATE CHANGE AND I

Climate change is the most severe natures’ threats faced today. Human activities that contribute to climate change include in particular the burning of fossil fuels and various agricultural and industrial practices. These activities result in the emission of major ‘greenhouse gases’ responsible for climate change. As a developing country, Sri Lanka is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change due to its’ tropical regional location. Most of our socio-economic activities are heavily reliant on climate-sensitive sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, coastal zone based fishery, water resources and health.

Tell us what you think climate change is doing to our homes… our forests… our oceans… our fresh water… our food… our health and OUR LIVES!

British Council supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy has organised a poetry, poster and art competition on the impacts of climate change.

POETRY
Use the age-old art of poetry to share your thoughts on climate change.

POSTER
Use illustrations and text to express how you can make a positive contribution through your attitude, behaviour and lifestyle to reduce the adverse effects of climate change.

ART
Submit an original piece of your artwork that shows how climate change is affecting people in Sri Lanka.

SUBMISSION
• Send your entry along with the filled application form and
a copy of your National Identity Card (NIC) to:

• You can also collect the application form from the
British Council offices in Colombo (Information Desk)
and Kandy (Membership Desk)

Selection Panel
The entries will be judged by a panel comprising representatives of British Council, the Norwegian Embassy and a panel of professionals in climate change, poetry and art.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION
The last date for submitting entries has been extended to Saturday 6 February 2010

Rules and requirements

If you are still in school your entry must be accompanied with a completed application form certified by a school authority. If not, please provide a valid form of identification (a photocopy of your National Identity Card or Passport)
Entries should not have been published or used in any form before the time of entry and may not be used during the 'Climate Change and I' competition until the completion of it.
All submissions must be the original work of the entrant
British Council will have full copyright over the entries. British Council and The Norwegian Embassy may use the entries for hosting on their website or in their publications
The British Council will have the explicit right to publish and / or utilise in any other manner, any of the submitted entries, in whole or part, for British Councils non-profit activities and awareness programmes
Only one entry per category (poetry / poster / art) will be accepted per individual
The poetry and poster entries maybe in Sinhala, Tamil or English
Any medium or combination of mediums is allowed for the art and poster competitions - pencil / ink / water colour / charcoal / pastel / collage / acrylic
'Legal’ size paper (12x15 inches) should be used for the art and poster competitions
Photocopying of guidelines and application form is allowed
Your name, category (poetry / poster / art), and title of piece must be written on the reverse of the entry
Entries that do not meet the above selection criteria will be disqualified
