Learn Sinhala and Tamil at the British Council

The  Sinhala 1 course is designed for beginners who want to gain a basic, practical knowledge of the spoken language, focusing on everyday situations - shopping, giving directions, introducing yourself, asking simple personal questions, etc.

The Sinhala scripts are introduced, partly as an aid to pronunciation since both languages are 'phonetic', but the main emphasis is on simple colloquial language.

Our 20-hour Sinhala 2 course is designed for anyone who has completed the beginners’ course, or who already has a basic knowledge of the spoken language.

Both courses will be taught by Michael Meyler, who has been teaching our popular Sinhala beginners' classes for the past 12 years.
