Hornby Regional Schools

Call for applications for participants

In August 2010 British Council Sri Lanka in co-operation with the A S Hornby Education Trust will conduct the seventh Hornby Regional School in Sri Lanka. The A S Hornby Educational Trust was established to promote opportunities to study English, in particular in the teaching of English as a foreign or second language. The Hornby Schools are run with the support of the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust. The Trust was established in 1961 by A.S. Hornby, an English teacher in Japan, who authored the first Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD).

The theme for the 2010 School is Bringing Grammar to Life in the Secondary Classroom.

The course will be led by Adrian Tennant. Adrian has over 20 years experience of teaching, training and writing both in Britain and overseas. He has been the Course Director on five British Council Hornby Schools and the tutor on one as well as running many in-service courses in countries around the world and he has given conference presentations and workshops in around thirty countries in Asia, Africa, Europe the Middle East and South America. Adrian has contributed materials to over 50 books for primary, secondary and adult students. These include Inspirations, Move, Move Ahead, Synergy, Inside Out and Straightforward. He was the co-author and materials expert on a five-level course for schools in Uzbekistan (Grades 5-9) called English Matters (Macmillan 2002, 2004) where he worked with local teachers training them to become materials writers. In 2008 he worked on a materials development course for writers from seven countries in South Asia.

SEMINAR OBJECTIVES

To raise awareness of teachers on how to:

use practical activities and techniques to teach grammar in large classes   
supplement textbook and resources from your surroundings   
analyse language for classroom purposes   

In addition, Hornby Schools will attempt to answer the question of how to balance fluency and accuracy. Some of the other benefits the School will attempt to provide are;

The participants will receive a collated booklet of all the work and lesson plans that the group has produced so that the activities can be tried in a realistic classroom setting.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

This School is aimed at teachers at the Secondary and Senior Secondary level from government or private schools or by facilitators nominated by NGOs/CSR Foundations, who teach learners in the age group of 11 - 18 years. Further each Hornby School will have experienced teacher trainers, from partner teacher training institutions, who will be cascading the programme to teachers in their institutions following their course. HORNBY SCHOOLS

Since the year 2000, Hornby Schools have gained recognition as one of the foremost professional development opportunities for the ELT community in India and Sri Lanka. These one week modules have helped directly train 1200 teachers, many of whom have cascaded the workshop to hundreds of teachers across the region. Last year, Hornby Schools directly trained 191 teachers and indirectly reached nearly  60,000 in Tamil Nadu and 150 state school teachers across India
