Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Whether you are a trained teacher in another discipline, or you have never taught before, you can now qualify to teach English by doing the CELTA course at the British Council Colombo.

What is the CELTA?
The CELTA, or Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is a passport to teaching and working around the world. Administered by Cambridge University, it is the most widely recognised international qualification for English teachers. With a CELTA in hand you may find yourself working in a summer school, as a Business English teacher, or on pre-sessional university courses. The possibilities are endless.

What does the CELTA consist of?

Input sessions
This covers sessions on language awareness, phonology, classroom management, learners, strategies and techniques for language teaching and learning, materials and equipment, and in depth analysis of the four skills.

Teaching practice
TP starts from day 2 and continues to the final day.  Trainees are divided into 2 groups, 1 group teaching elementary and 1 group teaching intermediate. They change half way through to get experience at the different levels. Each trainee teaches for a total of 6 hours.

Observations
You are also required to observe a minimum of 6 hours of lessons with experienced teachers.

Assignments
There are 4 assignments to be completed. These focus on:

Adult learners and learning contexts   
The language system   
Language skills   
Reflection on classroom teaching and identifying action points   

Tutorials
Tutorials are held twice during the course.  In these your performance and areas that need to be worked on are discussed with your tutor.

An external assessor visits the centre at the end of the course. To ensure that the course is being run up to the standard require by the University of Cambridge.

Who is eligible for the course?

You must be 18 years old or more   
You must have GCE Advanced level or equivalent   
If you are a non native-speaker, you should be proficient in oral and written use of the English language as demonstrated in an interview and written task   
You should demonstrate an interest in and an awareness of language and learning   
You should be able to commit the appropriate amount of time necessary to complete the course   

How are the participants assessed?
Candidates are assessed on teaching practice, professional awareness, and written assignments.

Why do the CELTA with the British Council?
We have a dedicated team of experienced trainers, along with extensive materials and resources for trainee use. Trainees do their teaching practice on-site and also observe experienced British Council teachers.

How can I enrol?
You will need to download both the application and the pre-interview task and submit them by the deadlines given below. Once your application and the pre-interview task have been approved, you will be invited for an interview. Please contact our Course Tutor for further information.
