Green Policy

One of the three British Council’s main working areas is climate change (environment).

British Council Serbia recognises that our activities can make an impact on the environment and is committed to improving our environmental performance. This will be achieved through the implementation and review of objectives and targets within the framework of an Environmental Management System (EMS). British Council Serbia is committed to reducing waste, recycling materials whenever possible and reducing the impact of our activity on the natural environment. We are committed to working with local and UK suppliers that take into consideration the protection of the environment through our procurement policy.

We will demonstrate our commitment by:

reviewing and understanding the range of environmental impact arising from our activities
ensuring that we comply with all relevant environmental legislation and with any other environmental obligations, requirements and commitment in Serbia
setting environmental objectives and targets for activities having the most significant impact, which will take account of the goals and aspirations of our partner and funding organisations
ensuring that all staff is informed about, understands and implements our policy
communicating our progress in reducing our environmental impact to internal and external stakeholders
reviewing this Policy periodically to take account of changes in our organisation’s targets, in the Serbian environmental legislation, or other internal and external factors.

Our current focus is to:

increase the efficiency of our energy and waste use across our estate and manage the carbon emissions of our own activity
minimise the generation of waste and implement re-use or recycling initiatives wherever possible
use our procurement influence to deliver more sustainable outcomes through working with suppliers and contractors
