MANDARIN CHINESE SPEAKING COMPETITION 2011

Congratulations to Alasdair Falcon from George Heriot's School Edinburgh, who came first in the Intermediate category of the Individual Language Ability section of the Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition.

Alasdair, along with all the other competition winners will spend a week long cultural visit to Beijing in April 2011.

Information about the 2011/12 competition will be on this site in early September 2011.

Does your school teach Mandarin Chinese?

If the answer is yes then by entering the Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition you and your students could win an exciting week long excursion to Beijing.

This annual competition is supported by the HSBC Global Education Programme and organised by the British Council to support and promote the teaching of Chinese as a modern foreign language in UK schools.

The competition which includes Individual Language Ability and Group Performance sections is for UK secondary schools, sixth form and FE college students who are non-native speaking learners of Mandarin Chinese.

This year regional heats took place in London and Newcastle with the final taking place at the British Museum in London on 10 March 2011. The finalists were competing for the prize of a week long cultural visit to Beijing in April 2011 for the winning students and the teacher of the winning group.

New school entrants are always very welcome, even if you have only recently started to teach Mandarin. The winner in the Beginner category of last year’s competition was from a school that had only been teaching Mandarin for a year.

For more information please visit the competition web site.

2010 Scottish Winners

Last year's final was a tense and exciting event for all those that took part and we would like to give special congratulations to Helen Rankin, from St George’s School for Girls, who won the Intermediate section of the Individual category and will soon be enjoying a trip to Beijing in April.

We would like to say well done to Annabelle Harris from St George’s School for Girls, who came third in the Advanced section of the Individual category.

We would also like to encourage schools from across Scotland to take advantage of the opportunity to develop links with China through language assistants and the range of grant funded opportunities and competitions the British Council supports. We hope that the success of these Scottish pupils inspires other schools to follow.
