Funding For Long Term Collaborations

This is funding for projects with some aspect of international collaboration. This could be the exchange of staff or pooling of research findings, or the creation of a network of researchers working on different aspects of a specific problem. Within the EU, the European Commission is a major funder of international collaboration projects, through the FP7 programme.

Royal Society
The Royal Society is the leading independent scientific body of the UK and the Commonwealth.  Funded research has to be within the natural sciences. The International Joint Project Programme is designed to enable international collaboration by providing a mobility grant for researchers and members of their research teams to cover travel, subsistence and research expenses

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)
The AHRC is the research council responsible for supporting high-quality research in arts and humanities for the cultural, creative and economic life of the UK. They have agreements with the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the German Research Council (DFG) enabling collaboration between UK and US, or UK and German, researchers respectively for Research Grants.

The Leverhulme Trust
The Trust makes awards for the support of research and education. The Trust emphasises individuals and encompasses all subject areas. Their International Networks enable a Principal Investigator to lead a research programme to stimulate an international exchange of ideas between UK universities and overseas institutions.

The Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation
The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is a UK charity. The Foundation’s purpose is to support closer links between Britain and Japan. Joint project grants support travel, subsistence and research for collaborative projects.

The European Science Foundation (ESF)
The ESF is an association of national science-funding organisations that aim to promote quality science at a European level. Their EUROCORES scheme enables researchers in different EU countries to develop collaboration. Their Exploratory Workshops enable scientists to examine scientific issues, and lead to long-term collaboration.

Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng)
The RAEng is Britain’s national academy for engineering. Their Global Research Award scheme is intended to help Engineering Researchers employed in the UK to travel and work overseas for periods between three months and one full year with a view to establishing long-term collaborations.

The Wellcome Trust
The Wellcome Trust is the largest charity in the UK. It funds innovative biomedical research, in the UK and internationally. Full details are available on the Wellcome Trust grants pages.
