The EC held information days in Brussels on 24 - 25 September for the calls for proposals covered in the 2009 Energy Work Programme within FP7. The Work Programme outlines the objectives and activities for the programme during that year. The presentations were broadcast live over the internet and there was also an opportunity for applicants to meet individually with project officers from the EC. The event had an overview of the policy background, the research objective, details on the different calls including the current joint bio-refineries call. There was also an overview of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, which is a funding programme outside of FP7.
The event was opened by Raffaele Liberali the Director for Energy at DG Research in the EC. He outlined the political framework for the programme which is based on three main targets of a 20 per cent greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2020, a 20 per cent improvement in energy efficiency, and to have 20 per cent of renewable energy sources in the energy mix by 2020. As well as the calls in the Work Programme there will also be two calls for tender; one with DG Information Society on smart energy networks, and another in collaboration with Brazil on second generation biofuels.
