Sports

Many children are interested in sports. You'll find lots of resources to practise vocabulary about this topic on LearnEnglish Kids:
http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-topics-sports

With these activities your child will be able to:
practise the names of different sports in English
practise words for sports equipment and clothes
practise words for extreme or adventure sports
practise listening to the names of adventure sports
try an online quiz about adventure sports
try a listening activity with a song
understand what is happening in a simple story
listen to a story about two children on a skiing holiday
practise reading directions with a printable activity
try a fun quiz to find out if they are a daredevil

These activities are for all ages and levels. Younger children will enjoy the Busy Buzz song, while older children with a higher level of English will enjoy the quiz about extreme sports. They will be keen to win the race.

Activities are marked with a symbol to indicate the best age group and level. Look at these when you choose which activities to use with your child.

You can use these materials to practise English with your child. On this page you'll find an idea for an activity you can try with your child. On the left you'll also see a list of links to resources about this topic on teaching websites that you may find useful.

SOMETHING TO DO WITH YOUR CHILD

Buzz and Bob are two children who are on holiday at an adventure camp. You can find the story here:
http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-stories-sports.htm

Look at the first frame of the story with your child. Buzz and Bob love adventure sports. Ask your child to name as many adventure sports as they can. Use a dictionary to find out the names of the sports in English (for example, surfing, climbing etc)
Look at the second frame. There is a list of sports - one for each day. Do you know what all these sports are? (Click on your mouse to see the list)
Read the story and watch what Buzz and Bob do each day.
When you reach the parachuting frame you will see a question: 'How many sports do Buzz and Bob do at the camp?' With you child try to remember how many sports Buzz and Bob have done. This is a good time to practise the names of the sports! (The answer is six).
When you have finished the story, there are two activity worksheets that you can print. Why not do them with your child? You could also talk about what your child would like to do on their ideal holiday camp.
