History
In English is a magazine published by the British Council in Portugal for teachers of English. The magazine was originally launched in December 1979 under the name of the Newsletter. It then became the Journal, and then in Autumn 2002 took on a new look and a new name - In English.
Most of the articles are written by British Council teachers and others by guest writers, including well known names in the world of ELT. The magazine is mainly directed at state school teachers of English: indeed the magazine started life as a joint venture with the Direções Gerais do Ensino Básico e Ensino Secundário. It has also spawned a book: At the Chalkface (Edward Arnold, 1985).
