IELTS Academic writing module

Our series of five 90-minute lessons is designed to help you prepare for the IELTS Academic Writing module.  The materials can be used online or you can print them and do them on paper.  Each .pdf lesson has the answers at the end.

In Lesson 1 you’ll…

learn about the different kinds of writing you may be asked to do in the test   
practise reading and understanding tables   
look at different ways of expressing numbers   
practise ‘brainstorming ideas’ for compositions   
revise language for expressing purpose, cause and effect   
look at ways of writing ‘problem and solution’ type compositions   

In Lesson 2 you can

practise identifying the important information in a table.   
learn how to summarise figures from a table.   
look at what makes a good opening paragraph for task 2 discursive essays.   
review language for making comparisons.   
practise planning a composition   
review useful language for structuring an argument.   

In Lesson 3:

learn about different types of chart.    
practise getting information from charts.    
learn to recognise static and dynamic charts.    
review simple verb tenses for describing charts.    
learn how to organise a balanced discussion.    
become more aware of formal language for compositions.    

In Lesson 4:

practise reading and getting information from dynamic charts.   
learn structures and expressions for describing increase and decrease.   
practise using prepositions when describing numbers and dates.   
learn how to use a mind map to generate ideas for Task 2.   
practise supporting your opinions with reasons and examples.   
learn useful words and expressions for supporting your opinions.   
learn how topic sentences help to organise your writing   

In Lesson 5 you will ...

practise ‘reading’ and understanding diagrams   
learn language for expressing purpose, cause and result   
review and practise relative clauses   
review and practise passive voice   

review sentence relationships that we have covered in previous lessons.   
learn how to organise a good academic style paragraph.   
practise writing more complex sentences.   
practice checking your work for mistakes.   
learn what makes a good conclusion to your composition.
