Person Specification and Competencies required
Essential

First degree or equivalent   
Certificate-level TEFL qualification    
At least two years' post TEFL qualification EFL teaching experience    
An interest in teaching both Young Learners and Adults   
Classroom management skills which maximise learning opportunities with the ability to make learning fun    
Full mastery of English across all 4 skills to CEFR C2/IELTS band 9.   
An interest and willingness to be part of a dynamic team which seeks to pursue the wider British Council aims    
Ability to get things done - i.e. Demonstrates results, Prioritises work, Organises work (teaching and non-teaching duties), Works within quality cost and time framework, Uses resources effectively, Demonstrates the ability to work under pressure at particular times in the academic term

Desirable

A diploma-level TEFL qualification    
Word-processing

Experience of the British Council's (or other) Performance Management system.    
Special requirements of the job (eg regular overtime, unsocial hours, eligibility for special allowances. Physical disability will not normally be a disqualifying factor for a job).    

Teaching is from Monday to Saturday. However, most teachers work Tuesday to Saturday. Teaching is on or off-site and teachers may be required to travel within Greater Lisbon. Most teaching occurs between early afternoon and 9 or 10 pm and sometimes it is necessary for teachers to work a split shift. Teachers (except Hourly Paid teachers) are required to substitute as part of their contract.

EFL EXAMINERS

We employ two types of examiners:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examiners    
University of Cambridge ESOL examiners    

We also employ hourly-paid staff to supervise exams (invigilators) and to direct people around the system on exam days (marshals). See our Work with us page

IELTS EXAMINERS
IELTS examiners are qualified, experienced English language specialists. The Speaking and Writing Modules of the IELTS test are assessed by certificated examiners. IELTS examiners are required to re-certificate every two years and their performance is closely monitored to ensure global standards are maintained.

Each IELTS test centre recruits and trains a pool of examiners. Centres recruit on a needs basis and nominate examiners who meet the following requirements:

applicants must be native speaker (or a non-native speaker of an overall IELTS Band 9)    
applicants must have a relevant TEFL qualification e.g. CELTA/DELTA    
applicants must have at least three years relevant teaching experience.    

The applications of the nominated examiners have to be approved by IELTS Australia/British Council. After approval the examiner undergoes face-to-face training, conducted by an accredited IELTS trainer and is required to do the certification assessment.

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE ESOL EXAMINERS
We occasionally recruit oral examiners for the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

You must:

be educated to first degree level or equivalent    
have at least three years' relevant teaching experience    
have a recoginsed relevant teaching qualification*    
be aged over 25 and under 65 on appointment    
demonstrate linguistic accuracy    
demonstrate communicative ability    
have clear diction, including intelligibility outside the region/country where examining takes place.

*an applicant may be exempt from formal teaching qualification in the light of considerable teaching experience supported by positive references. Cambridge ESOL will take the final decision in such cases.
