The test consists of the following three written modules:
For each module there is a test of 80 questions which lasts 1 hour 20 min. The first three modules can be taken:
Candidates may not repeat a module within 4 months at any centre.
* Two optional modules of TKT: KAL and CLIL can be added to the three core modules, or can each be taken completely independently.
TKT can be taken at all British Council Examination Centres in Poland.
Go to the ExamFinder below to check when you can register and take the exam.
In order to register for TKT you should:
Entries sent after close of registration or incomplete documentation will not be accepted.
If there are fewer than 10 candidates registered for a session the test will not be organised. In such an eventuality, the British Council will offer candidates either a full reimbursement of the examination fee or transfer to the next available exam session.
Candidates will receive information on the exam timetable (Statements of Entry) by e-mail approximately 2 weeks before the date of their test.
Each module is free-standing, and there is no aggregate score. Candidates receive a certificate for each module they take. Results are available 4 weeks after the session.
Each question carries one mark, so the maximum mark for each module is 80. Candidate performance is reported using the following four bands:
BAND A candidate at this level demonstrates:
1 Limited knowledge of TKT content areas
2 Basic, but systematic knowledge of TKT content areas
3 Breadth and depth of knowledge of TKT content areas
4 Extensive knowledge of TKT content areas
For example, for a candidate to achieve TKT Band 3, a score of at least 45-50 marks is required.
Many teachers will follow a preparation course before taking the test but they can also prepare themselves through their own reading and study, if they prefer.
Cambridge University Press in co-operation with Cambridge ESOL have published The TKT Course by M. Spratt, A. Pulverness, M. Williams, which can be useful in preparing for TKT.
