MEET THE POLISH FINALIST OF THE IYDE’ 2008 AWARD    Orange lozenge left

Michal Kowalski – the winner of the Polish stage of the International Young Design Entrepreneur competition

Michal Kowalski, the founder of ’Fundacja Dobrego Designu’ (Quality Design Foundation) and of the ‘St.Michael’ agency, which supports young designers, has won the Polish stage of the International Young Design Entrepreneur award. In September 2008 he represented Poland at the international competition finals.

The jury explained their verdict as follows: Michal Kowalski’s work, as well as the mission of ‘Fundacja Dobrego Designu’ and the ‘St Michael’ agency, fills a gap on the Polish market within the widely understood concept of the design sector. Even though they mainly focus on fashion, the Foundation and agency support artists from all creative sectors and popularise in Poland the awareness of modern design.

The winner himself thinks that the mission of the Foundation is important, since whereas Polish design keeps pace with global trends, this sector is not sufficiently valued by firms and institutions supporting culture. A lot of talented Polish artists already create works that are equal to the best of world-famous pieces. Popularising knowledge about good design will enable these artists to develop further – says Michal Kowalski.

At the international IYDE’2008 finals Michal Kowalski fought for the main prize with representatives of the design sector from countries such as: Egypt, the Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Slovenia, South Africa, Taiwan and Turkey. He and the other finalists participated in meetings with representatives of the British design sector in Glasgow, and at the famous London trade fairs: 100% Design and the London Design Festival.

The International Young Design Entrepreneur Award was the third of seven International Young Creative Entrepreneur (IYCE) awards organised this year to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the British Council in Poland.
