BRITISH COUNCIL EXAMINATIONS SERVICES IN kRAKOWThe British Council office in Kraków has existed since 1999. Although it is a relatively new department it has a profound and stormy history. Since the very beginning it has been located in the Market Square so that there is an easy access for both the course participants and exam candidates. In 2005 there was a fire in the historic tenement. The glow of the fire was visible from a distance of a few kilometres. Crowds of people gathered in the Market Square to witness the destruction of a hundred years old historic building.
The staff of the British Council managed to run a quick and efficient evacuation. All the participants were led out of the place within minunte and a half. The exam certificates were safely carried out too and the equipment secured against the fire.
After the fire brigade had conducted the operation, the damage was assessed and sadly the building turned out not to be fit for further use. For the next half a year British Council searched for the new venue. In the meantime the staff tried to do their best to make the exam sessions go smoothly. At the time, every two weeks IELTS exams were held and in December 2005 FCE, CAE, and CPE were carried out for hundreds of candidates. As it is in real life, there are ups and downs so after this period of difficulties, finally a new venue was found.
Currently, Kraków office is situated in the Grey House right in front of the Mickiewicz monument on the Market Square. The classrooms, where the courses and oral exams take place, overlook the most beautiful view of the Cloth hall, famous florists and St. Wojciech’s Church (St. Albert’s Church). You can feel the atmosphere of the city here. An observant tourist can see the trumpet player in the Mariacki Church tower, who sounds a bugle call every hour. This is all the reason why it is worth studying here and take the exams. The friendly atmosphere of the place will make it even more pleasant.
