What we do

Our aims

We bring together people involved in the arts in Norway and the UK. Our aim is to exchange ideas and experiences with professionals working within the arts in both our countries, and through them share these with Norwegian audiences. In co-operation with Norwegian arts partners, we initiate a number of arts events in Norway every year involving British artists - individuals as well as companies or group events.

In particular we aim to establish relationships that bring (often for the first time in Norway) interesting and exciting new talents - those who have perhaps already established themselves in the  UK and who represent the regional and ethnic diversity which enriches British cultural life today.

We base all our events, whether in design, in film, in literature, in the performing arts – dance, drama, music – and in the visual arts, on working in partnership with Norwegian arts organisations or professional individuals. This is the best way to ensure that our arts events meet a genuine interest among Norwegian audiences. It also encourages an exchange of ideas between professionals within the arts in Norway and in the UK.

Our Partners

Because our role as partner and facilitator is important to us, we start planning arts events with our Norwegian partners usually at least one year before the  event is due to take place. This is also controlled by the timing of our budgeting cycle.

We work very closely with our professional arts colleagues in our arts department in London. These specialists provide us with important links to the British arts world.

Arts information

We aim to help Norwegian arts administrators looking for new networks and information from the UK to bring to Norway.

If you’re a Norwegian artist or company interested in presenting work in the UK, take a look at Visiting Arts – it’s job is to smooth the way for the inward flow of foreign arts into England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

You will need to have a UK producer to qualify for the Visiting Arts funding programmes, but even if you don’t, take a look at their website for specific information on UK grants, a guide to publications and resources about UK fundraising and an online listing service of artists interested in presenting their work in the UK.

If you’re a professional UK visual artist looking abroad, the Grants to Artists Scheme might be of interest. It’s our one grant scheme designed to help professional UK artists who are resident in the UK to exhibit overseas in public or commercial spaces. The scheme is administered by our Visual Arts Department in close consultation with British Council Directorates overseas. Either the artist or the hosting gallery, museum or art space may apply. Check out this site, for information, and answers to FAQs about the scheme.
