How we work

We work to bring the best of contemporary UK arts to Norway. Find out how we work in partnership with Norwegian organisations and institutions to develop events of mutual benefit.

We base all our events, whether in the arts, in science or in education, on working partnerships with Norwegian organisations or professional individuals. This is the best way for us to share experiences and gain mutual benefit.  Sometimes these partnerships will involve more than one partner organisation both in Norway and in the UK but in every case there will be a shared interest in putting on the event.

For some events we also collaborate with other UK organisations based in Norway, the British Embassy or the national British tourist office VisitBritain, where their particular areas of interest can bring added value to the event.

Our work in the arts connects Norwegians with the UK arts scene. We share the UK’s most dynamic, creative output by providing links and the latest information on UK arts.

We are not a grant-giving organisation in the traditional sense. Rather, we connect Norwegians with the UK by offering opportunities to see new work, providing the Norwegian public with the latest UK ideas and expertise. We also help to create and nurture lasting partnerships that are mutually beneficial to the UK and Norway.

We are approached with many more exciting ideas for events and projects each year than we can possibly be involved in. Here are some tips to help you understand the ways in which we might be able to work together

We work at least a year in advance. As a large organisation working in over 100 countries worldwide, we have to plan our programme carefully with our UK colleagues and Norwegian partners with a minimum 12-month planning time
Our financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March. Plans and budgets for the coming financial year are drawn up between August and October of the preceding year and should be approved by the end of January. If you have a project that you think we might want to be involved with, please contact us by August of the year before the project will take place.
We are only able to give support to events where we have been involved from the outset in the planning of the event. If therefore you apply to us for funding for a project that has already been set up, your application is very unlikely to be successful.
We don't have a standard application form to fill out: each project is assessed annually in light of current British Council priorities (both local and international) and available budgets and strategies applied across other sectors (such as science or education). What we do need is an outline of the project, the proposed timing, the UK focus or elements, the target audience, the amount of financial input sought from us and how much this is of the total budget.
Although we have an official planning cycle, you may still approach us during the year if a project or opportunity arises that you think we may be interested in. We will have less financial flexibility but are always interested in hearing about new opportunities and keeping lines of communication open.
We focus on high impact, fresh, inspired and distinctive ideas. We look for projects and work where we can add real value.
We prioritise work that is genuinely beneficial to both the UK and Norway. In the arts, this is often developmental or process-based work.
We like projects that involve more than one discipline or sector of the UK and Norwegian communities – projects that involve people from various arts disciplines or that involve the science and/or education sectors.
Primarily, it is not our job is to develop or promote Norwegian creativity in the UK – we are the UK’s agency for cultural relations.
