Programme Developments: Multi-lateral Community Xchange

Community Xchange (CX) is a professional development programme for formal and informal community leaders. Through a range of activities Community Xchange aims to build the skills of participants to facilitate the positive participation of young people as active global citizens, and develop inter cultural dialogue that makes a positive difference to their communities.

Teams of 30 community workers, with equal numbers from the UK and an overseas partner country, work in host communities for 3 weeks in the UK and 3 weeks in the overseas country. Over the course of an exchange participants take part in professional development modules, work attachments and shadowing, and community events to promote active citizenship among young people.

Durban January 2010 & Belfast March 2010

The theme of this exchange is ‘Creative Methodologies in Youth and Community Work’ and the project links 3 cities in the Northern hemisphere (Belfast, Paris and Los Angeles) with 3 cities in the Southern hemisphere (Durban in South Africa, Freetown in Sierra Leone and Kigali in Rwanda).

5 Youth Workers / Community Development Workers have been recruited from Belfast and are joining with 25 others recruited from the 5 other cities involved in the project. The entire group spent 3 weeks in Durban living in family homestays and undertaking community placements as well as visiting organisations and communities of interest. This leg of the project took place in January 2010 and was followed by a similar 3 week programme in Belfast in March 2010.
