What is Next Generation Science?

OVERVIEW OF NGS ACTIVITIES
Next Generation Science will run from 2005-2008 and we will keep developing new activities.

Lab Demonstrations
These will enable the students to see cutting edge scientific research at first hand, with a guided tour from the scientists actually performing the experiments. The first lab demonstrations in Rotterdam were in the departments of Clinical Genetics, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where scientists use state of the art technology to uncover the genetic mechanisms underlying disease and detect congenital abnormalities. Science Student Workshops
The workshops are intended to encourage students to view the possibility of a career in science as exciting and empowering; a gateway to an international career. The science youth workshops are led by science researchers and scientists specialising in communication, and tackle issues such as genetics and identity, sustainability, and ethical decisions in science. The first Science Student Workshops took place during the Rotterdam-London programme.

Junior Science Café
Junior Science Café builds on the success of the Café Scientifique movement to provide a space and a format for young people to discuss the issues which are transforming their world. Junior Science Cafés are facilitator-led discussions organised in an informal setting such as a cafeteria or common room to provide a platform for all pupils to get involved.

Science Teacher Workshops
We organise workshops for teachers and young researchers in order to share knowledge of ways of enhancing science learning in their schools. The first Science Teacher Workshop took place during the Rotterdam-London programme.

Online photo competition
From October 2005-January 2006 we hosted a digital photo competition for secondary school students. Other people were also welcome to add their images to the photo gallery. As the competition ran during the Rotterdam-London programme, the categories for the photo competition are Climate Change and Genetics&Identity. View the winning pictures and the gallery.

Poster exhibitions
We are touring two separate poster exhibitions around the schools participating in the Rotterdam-London programme. Depending on the feedback, we may extend the touring schedule to other schools or find other exhibitions to add to the available materials.

Networking for teachers
Share your ideas and experiences to enhance science learning. Activities can take place within your school, your community and/or between schools and academic institutions. Dr Claire McNulty, Science Consultant NGS, has pulled together a number of ideas.
