A great opportunity for football coaches in Morocco

The English Premier League and British Council are coming to Morocco to develop a new innovative project called ‘Premier Skills’ (22-28 March 2009).

Premier Skills is a partnership between the British Council and the Premier League, and focuses on English language, football coaching and leadership skills. The initiative has already enjoyed a successful pilot phase in Egypt and India with plans underway to expand the programme further.

The UK is a world leader in the use of sport, specifically football, to deliver wider social and educational outcomes.  The Premier League supports a range of programmes in England that deliver inclusion, education, health and equalities – through the medium of football.

Premier Skills takes the concept to a wider global audience, helping to set a new agenda for social and educational development through football.

Premier Skills builds capacity among community leaders and coaches through face-to-face football coaching, and leadership and English language skills development. It also supports English language learning through a range of online resources with a football-based theme.

In addition to capacity building, Premier Skills aims to set an agenda on how football can be used for social inclusion, education, health and equality. It also aims to engage in institutional change, working with education and youth ministries, football associations, NGOs and so on to help make this a reality.

Who are our partners for this project?
Our partners in the project include l'Institut Royal de Formation des Cadres (Centre Moulay Rachid), Club T.A.S - La Tihad Athlétique Sport  -de Foot Feminin, the Moroccan Association of Sister Cities International, the Association Marocaine de Sport et Developpement, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Who are the participants?
The participants will range from sports students (Centre Moulay Rachid), to young female football players (club T.A.S) , to social workers from local associations, teachers (Ministry of Sports) as well as grassroots coaches from small associations.

How this programme will help them?
Our pilot projects in Egypt and India have shown us that by working with small groups of enthusiastic sports volunteers, coaches, teachers and trainers, we can help to create community coaching networks which we hope will bring quality football activities to 1000s of young people. The face to face programme involves practical football coaching sessions as well as classroom based input on a range of coach education topics, such as fitness, nutrition and community sports administration.

What about the Moroccan agenda?
Morocco was chosen as the hub for North and West Africa. Countries such as Tunisia, Egypt, Cameroon and Senegal will choose their best participants to take part in the 2nd phase of the project which will take place one year after the first phase in Morocco.
