General ELT Resources for Teachers

Make the most of the World Wide Web

Searching the Web

For the widest search, try
AltaVista.  To search by categories, Yahoo (international) or Yahoo UK is probably still the best. Using a search engine, such as Dogpile, you can automatically send your search to a dozen different engines at once. If you are looking for quality, rather than quantity, try the new service from the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Computer Mediated Communication

Egroups
Make your own discussion group for your students. As well as email, groups can have online chats, databases, calendars and other facilities.  Students must have email addresses, ( Hotmail can be used to set them up).

Tripod
Set up your own website for students to communicate with the world.  The website includes tools for composing internet pages online.

Vocabulary Teaching Resources

Word list: Frequency Indicator
If you have text in electronic form, paste it into the box on this site and click ‘Do It!’  The software will sort the words in the text either alphabetically, or in terms of the most or least frequent.

Get The News

BBC Online
One of the biggest websites on the web, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Online is constantly updated, easy to navigate and rich in news and background articles.  It is highly recommended.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Internet TESL Journal Links Page
The largest selection of links currently available for Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESL). The links are not evaluated, but they are exhaustive. Includes links for both teachers and students.

Dave's ESL Cafe on the Web
Lots of items for teachers including a job centre, ideas page, discussion forum, help centre and links page. One of the busiest English as a Foreign Language (EFL)/English as a Second Language (ESL) websites on the Internet.

The Tower of English
An increasingly sophisticated website, the Tower now offers a good range of lesson plans and a mechanism for getting teachers and online students together.

Englishonline
Free English language teaching (ELT) resources that can be helpful to your teaching.
