This exciting portal brings schools in more than 70 countries around the world together through creative partnerships which enable young people to work together, learn from each other, from authentic resources - created by them, for them and with the help of their teachers. This portal was initiated by Rt. Hon Charles Clark, former Minister of Education of England in 2004 and is managed by the British Council.
What is Global Gateway?
This website enables everyone in education around the world to establish creative partnerships. It is a “one-stop-shop” that provides quick access to detailed information on how to develop the international dimension in education.
How was it developed?
Ministry of Education and Science of Montenegro will soon sign a strategic partnership with DfES (Ministry of Education of England) which allows primary, secondary and VET schools in Montenegro to engage in these partnerships with any particular school in the world which is a member of this project.
Why do we need it?
Do you know that the word “global” was first used way back in the 1950s?! Of course, the notion of the globalization has significantly changed due to two main things – the Internet and cheaper air travel. It has increasingly been gaining on its true meaning in this century. The exchange of knowledge, cultures, skills, values and goods has made our planet as interdependent and interrelated as never before.
This has brought both to countries and individuals countless opportunities for development and self-development. The virtual world of the Internet has enabled us to become closer, to better understand each other and to work towards mutual understanding, tolerance and respect – we all have got a dual citizenship – that is, we are nationals of our own country, and at the same time global citizens of the “global village”. By creating networks, building relationships through cooperative projects and programmes, and establishing links between schools, the educational institution contributes to a young person’s identity and with his or her sense of being a part of the wider world community.
We hope that you will be able to join us and help putting Montenegro in this international map.
Who are they for?
They are intended for teachers and pupils but others can also be informed about what Global Gateway is and what their children are getting involved in. The customized pages in Montenegrin language will allow head teachers, parents, local education authorities and local community to learn more about these partnerships and benefits they bring, not only to pupils but to their communities as well.
How to get engaged?
How can we help our pupils to become part of this? Global Gateway will enable you to register your school on the portal and start making projects with over 8,500 schools. You may think that this is difficult but after initial reluctance you will see that most of the work is done by pupils and that they love this form of learning and also, the world can see their work. More than 70 countries have been registered on the portal so you can really be as creative as you like. Would you like to link with the UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan? No problem – just look for the age group and type of project and you’ll find them. Would you like to start your own project and invite others to join you? You will be able to do that as well. More importantly, you will have all the resources and software needed for building one of these projects. Although private language schools will not be able to register, you will still be able to use the materials, ideas, lesson plans that are freely available to anyone. There will also be a part of the portal called eLanguages where you will be able to find materials in form of sound files, pictures, video clips which you can immediately use in your classroom.
You can download the Presentations about Global Gateway and learn how to register here.
If you want to receive more information on the project, please contact Vanja Madzgalj, British Council manager, at our office in Podgorica.
