The University of Sussex received its Royal Charter in 1961 and admitted its first students in October of the same year. Since its inception, Sussex has established an international reputation as one of the leading research universities in the UK. Our interdisciplinary rather than departmental structure characterises some of the most distinctive research undertaken here. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, the University achieved high grades and all of our subject areas were judged to produce research of national and international excellence. A number of the faculty are Fellows of the British Academy or Royal Society, and two of its science faculty are Nobel Laureates. Currently Sussex is ranked in the top 25 in the UK, in the top 50 in Europe and among the top 150 universities in the world.
Sussex is home to researchers and students from over 120 countries and we have links with every continent of the world. It was part of our founders’ vision that Sussex should be an international institution. With international students totalling 2,300, nearly 25% of the 10,000 student population, and many study abroad opportunities for our students we are proud to have that vision alive today
LocationSussex boasts one of the most beautiful and picturesque campuses in Britain and is set in acres of rolling parkland, combining award-winning modern architecture with green open spaces. It is situated just outside Brighton – sometimes referred to as ‘London by the Sea’. Brighton, with its stunning Regency and Georgian architecture, has a long history as a fashionable seaside resort, with miles of pebble beach and two traditional piers. It has now become the entertainment capital of the south coast with one of the most active arts scenes in the UK. It’s a vibrant and buzzing place, but also a quirky, eccentric and cosmopolitan city.
London is an hour away by train, so it’s near enough to visit for the day or even just the evening. Gatwick Airport is only 30 minutes away and Sussex is ideally located for trips across the English Channel to explore mainland Europe.
Places to visit in the local area include the historic towns of Lewes, Arundel and Chichester, and any number of picturesque villages, old churches and castles.
AccommodationStudents will be housed in university managed accommodation, either on the Sussex campus or in Brighton & Hove. Most rooms are single-occupancy, with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. There are some ensuite rooms with private bathrooms. All university accommodation is self-catering. Most rooms are equipped with a sink, and have networked data points. Deadline for applying is the August for students starting in Autumn, and the 1st November for students starting in the Spring Term.

International StudentsThe University’s International and Study Abroad Office provides assistance for overseas students and administers Study Abroad and exchange programmes between Sussex and partner institutions abroad. The Office is open on weekdays to answer queries on a range of issues such as immigration, employment or financial regulations. It also organises social events and excursions to places around Britain, enables you to experience life with a British family for a weekend, and produces the handbook and a termly newsletter for international students.
Sussex has a well-developed network of specialist staff within the schools who can help you deal with both academic and personal issues. Simple matters can often be dealt with swiftly by school administrative staff, who have a great deal of experience in dealing with a wide range of questions. Students can also have access to Psychological and Counselling Services.
The Student’s Union runs over 70 societies, including a Mexican Society and there are 35 sports clubs. The University also runs lots of activities, entertainment and excursions, both on and off campus. Sport facilities on campus include multi-purpose sports halls, a fitness room, dance studio, squash courts, grass soccer pitches, a rugby and cricket pitch, tennis courts, a floodlit soccer and hockey pitch, and a lifestyles studio. There are swimming pools and of course, the sea, in Brighton, for any water sports.
