The demand for English is growing, and by 2015 half the world’s population will be speaking and/or learning the language.  Since the British Council’s establishment in 1934, promoting the learning and teaching of English has been a major feature of our activity and we are committed to creating partnerships for developing English teaching and learning programmes.

English skills are fundamental to international communication and access to knowledge and opportunities.  The way English is taught is changing radically as it comes to be seen as a basic skill to be learned by primary school children.

Learner and teacher development

Our ambition by 2010 is that all teachers and learners of English in the Middle East region will have access to the ideas, skills and materials that they need from the UK.
