Improving school leadership skills    

The aim of the project is to improve educational research and school leadership skills of school management of all levels — Heads, Deputy Heads and Subject Group Leaders.

The project is run in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, Education, Youth and Sport Department of Riga City Council and University of the West of England, UK.

Objectives

To train a group of Trainers (multipliers) who then train school management around Latvia   
To work out and pilot training course programme which is accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science   
To develop methodological materials for the course   
To exchange experience and learn from best practice in Europe thereby building networks of school leaders and increasing mutual understanding   
To promote UK excellence in school leadership to the wider professional community   

Activities

On 3–4 December 2008 the conference Leadership in Democratic Schools was held in hotel Lielupe, Jūrmala, Latvia. The aim of the Conference was to inform about the results of the School Leadership project and to highlight leadership role in modern school.

The Conference was organised by British Council Latvia, Curriculum and Examination Centre, Ministry of Education and Science, Education, Youth and Sport Deaprtment and Riga City Council.

The Conference was attended by approximately 80 participants — School Heads, Deputy Heads, Subject Group Leaders, Education policy makers and other interested parties.

Higly recognised school leadership experts like Dr David James, Professor of Education at the University of the West of England, Bristol and Dr Tony Bush, Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Warwick also took part in the Conference.
